Biography
Cune Press was founded in May, 1994, to explore innovative ways of bringing superior writing to public attention. We are a press. Our name is derived from “cunieform.” (In Latin cuni means “wedge.”)

In the ancient Near East the development of cuneiform script—simpler and more adaptable than hieroglyphics—enabled a large class of merchants and landowners to become literate. Clay tablets inscribed with wedged-shaped stylus marks made possible a broad intermeshing of individual efforts in trade and commerce. Cuneiform allowed scholarship to exist, art to flower, and created what some commentators define as the world's first civilization. When the Phoenicians developed their sound-based alphabet, they expressed it in cuneiform.
The idea of Cune is the democratization of learning, the faith that rarefied ideas—pulled from their pedestals and displayed in the streets—can transform the lives of ordinary people. And it is the conviction that ordinary people, trusted with the most precious gifts of civilization, will give our culture elasticity and depth—a necessity if we are to survive in a time of rapid change.

Cune is conducting several pilot projects and invites public participation.

Speed Editing for Writers

As a service to writers, we offer three types of low cost editing. Each type of edit has a fee of $100.

Purpose:

Experienced writers know that a fresh set of eyes examining a few pages of polished writing can often turn up significant idiosyncracies, pet phrases, and grammatical bad habits, which can be easily remedied once they are identified. All performers, including pros who perform on the printed page, are aware that last minute tuneups are comparatively easy to make and yet they have a disproportionatly large effect on the quality of the work in the eyes of readers.

Developing writers have found that several rules of thumb from an experienced editor, imparted in a brief review of a few pages of writing, can guide months or even years of writing.

1. Facility with Words

The first form of speed edit critiques the author's ability and facility with words. We show you how your choice of words, the construction of your sentences, and the flow of your paragraphs can be optimized to support your objectives in a piece of writing.

2. Manuscript Coaching

The second form of speed edit critiques the structure of a larger book or cycle of stories or essays. We sample your writing, study your outline, and read and comment on your synopsis or statement. We show you how to give definition and a simple, powerful arc to your writing.

3. Copy Editing

The third form of speed edit teaches you the essentials of the technical skill of copy editing. Simple rules, carefully and consistently applied, can turn an "uneven" effort into a professional piece of text that is "ready to go."

Side Benefits

Each participant in one or more speed editing sessions receives a free copy of An Ear to the Ground: Presenting New Writers from 2 Coasts, a collection of essays from Cune Press.

In addition, at the request of the writer, the editor can evaluate the writing and the project for possible eBook publication in the Ear to the Ground series. We are interested in showcasing writing talent and topics of public importance. Our editors can vote yes / no on the readiness of your writing for eBook publication with Cune Press.
