Lou works for his Dad in Cecalio Foundry & Machine Co. in New Jersey, turning honest work into an honest wage. However, local mafia has other ideas for this 20-year-old with rugged good looks and a quick mind, asking Lou to come work for them.

Lou chooses to leave for state rather than turn to a life of crime, so despite the Great Depression he heads west looking for opportunity. Soon he finds a job as a machinist, a place to live and a whole lot more in the hills of Colorado.

He settles on a small farm that once was owned by a propsector, who died six years earlier. The sign on the farm said "Tax Sale" and Lou purchases it thinking he'll find a quiet life under the wide-open skies. Soon he finds gold on the property, befriends a young black man and has another brush with the Mafia. Only after finding a wife and moving his parents out to Colorado does Lou finally get to live happily ever after.
