Unethical Magic by Sherry King
in Romance
|
The glass’ curve pixilated the romance heroine’s tan cleavage. Not exactly the cover from Beowulf. Well, if my new client didn’t like it, tough. She shouldn’t have asked my boss at the language lab professor Dirk—Dork—Booker for a tutor to meet her here after hours. Not my usual place to tutor English Comp. Sure it meant more money, but as I mentioned, I hate bars. Just for fun I scanned the mirror for a Jack Nicholson stand-in. The mirror showed a pretty young woman gliding toward me from the doorway. Spiked black hair, bright blue eyes, and a certain something in the way her features harmonized tipped the scales from pretty to beautiful. She wore a fringed suede dress and no coat, even though it had to be below freezing outside.
Smiling, I turned the barstool. Could this be my client? |

Harvest of the Heart by Michael Selmer
in Mystery, Suspense & Thriller
|
A malign figure bathes in the heavy shadows; he imagines his body absorbing their dark energy. He has become so powerful, his thoughts so brilliant, that he is concerned they might radiate through the pores of his head like some ghostly aura.
Although the still night air that surrounds him is warm, he pulls a black stocking cap from his pocket and pulls it tightly down over his head. She’ll be coming through the door soon and without it he is sure he would stand out like a lighthouse on a bleak and dark shoreline. Saturday, July 18, 1981 The scruffy young man on his hands and knees shook his head and growled . Grass from the newly-mown yard stuck to his arms and decorated the legs of his worn jeans. His shoulder length brown hair dangled around his face as he bounced up and down on his hands. |

Beating Back the Darkness by Tiger Hebert
in Sci-Fi & Fantasy
|
Aurion was never a truly peaceful world. It was not uncommon for races and tribes to make war with each other. But historically most conflict remained regional, primarily consisting of border wars. However, times are changing. . .
Wearing a verdant girdle, Darnan is divided by the tropical jungles and marshes that made up the Zenarian Wilds. It is in these jungles, along the Kiyai River, that the Zenarian capital of Karthusa exists. Once a thriving market place and central hub on the Darnan trade routes, Karthusa now stands in shadow and mystery. The men and women of the region have devoted their lives to their dark rituals and secrets. The Zenari have become far more aggressive, and it is their borderlands that have seen the most bloodshed in the last hundred years. |

Chapter 1 Bottle Shock
In a dreary industrial neighborhood, Macroflight Industries produced a small electronic part that in-flight toilets couldn't do without. Collin arrived at work wearing used jeans and a faded Nirvana t-shirt. It was Friday, which meant just a few hours of work until the weekend. He would drink even more than he did on weekdays after work. As he walked into the plant he immediately got the feeling that something was wrong. In the break room, a group of workers puffed doggedly at cigarettes in wanton disregard to the no smoking law. Another group released their angst on the pock-marked dart board, each with a Diet Coke in their non-throwing hand. Usually hardworking and jovial, they were oddly silent. Collin looked up at the management offices, more ablaze with activity than ever. He didn't recognize all of the faces. |

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
in Mystery, Suspense & Thriller
|
ADVENTURE I. A SCANDAL IN BOHEMIA
To Sherlock Holmes she is always the woman. I have seldom heard him mention her under any other name. In his eyes she eclipses and predominates the whole of her sex. It was not that he felt any emotion akin to love for Irene Adler. All emotions, and that one particularly, were abhorrent to his cold, precise but admirably balanced mind. He was, I take it, the most perfect reasoning and observing machine that the world has seen, but as a lover he would have placed himself in a false position. He never spoke of the softer passions, save with a gibe and a sneer. They were admirable things for the observer—excellent for drawing the veil from men’s motives and actions. |

An Early Fright
In Styria, we, though by no means magnificent people, inhabit a castle, or schloss. A small income, in that part of the world, goes a great way. Eight or nine hundred a year does wonders. Scantily enough ours would have answered among wealthy people at home. My father is English, and I bear an English name, although I never saw England. But here, in this lonely and primitive place, where everything is so marvelously cheap, I really don't see how ever so much more money would at all materially add to our comforts, or even luxuries. My father was in the Austrian service, and retired upon a pension and his patrimony, and purchased this feudal residence, and the small estate on which it stands, a bargain. |

Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson

|
1 The Old Sea-dog at the Admiral Benbow
SQUIRE TRELAWNEY, Dr. Livesey, and the rest of these gentlemen having asked me to write down the whole particulars about Treasure Island, from the beginning to the end, keeping nothing back but the bearings of the island, and that only because there is still treasure not yet lifted, I take up my pen in the year of grace 17__ and go back to the time when my father kept the Admiral Benbow inn and the brown old seaman with the sabre cut first took up his lodging under our roof. |
