Unethical Magic by Sherry King
in Romance
|
“Why did you give that human your name? Why did you interfere with my plans? You know I wouldn’t kill the girl.”
Freed from the compulsion to stay still, Lavina showed every sign of never shutting up. She could probably keep after him until dawn, hissing out those questions he couldn't answer. Cudougnay resisted the impulse to freeze the vampire again. No way to treat a valuable warrior. “We can dish the dirt later, Lavina.” “What?” Cudougnay smirked. He enjoyed hitting the vampire with new slang. Being immortal gave no excuse for being behind the times. He should know. “You should watch more TV, Lavina. I’ll talk to you later. Sorry about the freeze.” |

Harvest of the Heart by Michael Selmer

Sunday evening, September 18, 1983
Martin leaned heavily against the frame of the screen door. His eyes followed two men as they got out of the police cruiser, walked up the sidewalk and onto the porch. The older of the two had short, fading black hair peppered generously with flecks of gray; he was dressed in a white shirt and tie and carried a jacket draped over his left arm. The colors in its herringbone weave matched his hair perfectly. He was followed by a young, uniformed officer carrying a clipboard. Martin opened the door and stepped out. “Mr. Danforth?” the older gentleman said. When a nod was given, he continued, “I’m Detective Spence and this is Patrolman Reed.” |

Beating Back the Darkness by Tiger Hebert
in Sci-Fi & Fantasy
|
Clang, clang. The hammer beat down on the steel again and again. Tomar wiped his sweat covered brow and returned the hammer to its work. The smith's craft rang out as he beat the sword into its final shape. Another long day, another assortment of blades for the kingdom's armory. Tomar's mind shifted towards his wife and son that would be at home awaiting his return. The crisp air in the vale was a blend of burning fires and dinners being cooked. He was all too eager to put his tools away and close up the smith for the night. Pulling the cloak over his broad shoulders, he headed out of the square up the alley toward his home.

Chapter 3 Twisted Programming
The embattled planet quickly faded from view as the ship sped through the chaos of space. Dex walked into the living room where the Earth man was taking full advantage of the couch and the self-absorbed alien rested with the recliner fully extended. He walked up to Siff and plunked him in the forehead. "Ouch!" Siff bolted upright, rubbing his head. "What was that for?" "I was just going to ask you if you wanted a drink." He had the look of an eager servant, eyes wide with expectation. "No I don't want a drink," Siff whined, "I'm trying to nap. Keep that up and you're likely to find yourself floating out in space." |

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
in Mystery, Suspense & Thriller
|
ADVENTURE III. A CASE OF IDENTITY
“My dear fellow,” said Sherlock Holmes as we sat on either side of the fire in his lodgings at Baker Street, “life is infinitely stranger than anything which the mind of man could invent. We would not dare to conceive the things which are really mere commonplaces of existence. If we could fly out of that window hand in hand, hover over this great city, gently remove the roofs, and peep in at the queer things which are going on, the strange coincidences, the plannings, the cross-purposes, the wonderful chains of events, working through generations, and leading to the most outré results, it would make all fiction with its conventionalities and foreseen conclusions most stale and unprofitable.” |

We Compare Notes
We followed the cortege with our eyes until it was swiftly lost to sight in the misty wood; and the very sound of the hoofs and the wheels died away in the silent night air. Nothing remained to assure us that the adventure had not been an illusion of a moment but the young lady, who just at that moment opened her eyes. I could not see, for her face was turned from me, but she raised her head, evidently looking about her, and I heard a very sweet voice ask complainingly, "Where is mamma?" Our good Madame Perrodon answered tenderly, and added some comfortable assurances. I then heard her ask: "Where am I? What is this place?" and after that she said, "I don't see the carriage; and Matska, where is she?" |

3 The Black Spot
ABOUT noon I stopped at the captain's door with some cooling drinks and medicines. He was lying very much as we had left him, only a little higher, and he seemed both weak and excited. "Jim," he said, "you're the only one here that's worth anything, and you know I've been always good to you. Never a month but I've given you a silver fourpenny for yourself. And now you see, mate, I'm pretty low, and deserted by all; and Jim, you'll bring me one noggin of rum, now, won't you, matey?" |
