Unethical Magic by Sherry King
in Romance
|
Outside the Big Boy restaurant, the girl chattered with the young man dressed as a woman.
Cudougnay listened, careful to linger just at the edge of awareness, teasing at the girl’s ability to sense the invisible presence. Ki. Her name. With that fact, he cast awareness to the winds, heedlessly sifting thorough information fast as any computer. Ki, short for Hezekiah, usually a man's name, from the Christian's Bible. Last name Grace. Cudougnay’s lips quirked upward as she slid around on the ice with the cross-dressed boy, but no doubt in other circumstances Ki would live up to her family name. A small downstate hometown. Father died when she was eight. After Ki’s father died, placed with an aunt and years later in foster care. The mother? Died shortly after her birth. No records on the mother, not even a social security number. No siblings. |

Her nose pressed against the small round window while her eyes tried to take in all the sights flashing by. The plane started climbing steeply and the speed of the trees, buildings, and roads rushing beneath them began to slow and become easier to follow, until they absorbed into the misty gray of the low, wet clouds. The nebulous forms became lighter and then took on a reddish hue. Thirteen-year-old Elsa was enchanted when they broke above the clouds to reveal a plush, rumpled carpet, painted in hues of purple, pink and red that stretched to where a burning orange ball was sinking through the horizon. The plane turned and pointed its nose directly at the disappearing sun. |

Melgar left the surviving riders at the stables as he continued up the cobblestone corridor. The moon hung just out of reach. The night was half gone. Shadow's muscles rippled as she carried her beloved master up the winding incline toward the king's court. Townsfolk silently stared at the captain's blood stained armor with curiosity and concern. Only tales of battle have been heard in these mountains.
Melgar did not return their stares. He rode in silence with his black hair tied back and his eyes focused on the path ahead of him. His mind could not escape the images of the men he lost tonight. All counted, fourteen men gave their lives tonight. At least fourteen families would be missing a father, brother, or son tonight. |

Chapter 5 Love Stinks
Collin peered out the large window in the living room at the looming Paradis. Both hemispheres were dark, one obscured by shadow and the other dim for some mysterious reason. A bright, narrow strip glowed with sunlight, resembling a shining gold ring in space. As the ship touched down at the spaceport, Collin and Siff each hitched their allotted portion of Dex scraps to their backs, walking out into the eternal sunset. Collin almost fell backwards as the smell like a hot cattle-ranch struck him. "What the..." he choked. Siff didn't say a word as he walked briskly down the wide lane that ran the length of Paradis' terminator. |

ADVENTURE V. THE FIVE ORANGE PIPS
When I glance over my notes and records of the Sherlock Holmes cases between the years ’82 and ’90, I am faced by so many which present strange and interesting features that it is no easy matter to know which to choose and which to leave. Some, however, have already gained publicity through the papers, and others have not offered a field for those peculiar qualities which my friend possessed in so high a degree, and which it is the object of these papers to illustrate. Some, too, have baffled his analytical skill, and would be, as narratives, beginnings without an ending, while others have been but partially cleared up, and have their explanations founded rather upon conjecture and surmise than on that absolute logical proof which was so dear to him. |

A Wonderful Likeness
This evening there arrived from Gratz the grave, dark-faced son of the picture cleaner, with a horse and cart laden with two large packing cases, having many pictures in each. It was a journey of ten leagues, and whenever a messenger arrived at the schloss from our little capital of Gratz, we used to crowd about him in the hall, to hear the news. This arrival created in our secluded quarters quite a sensation. The cases remained in the hall, and the messenger was taken charge of by the servants till he had eaten his supper. Then with assistants, and armed with hammer, ripping chisel, and turnscrew, he met us in the hall, where we had assembled to witness the unpacking of the cases. |

5 The Last of the Blind Man
MY curiosity, in a sense, was stronger than my fear, for I could not remain where I was, but crept back to the bank again, whence, sheltering my head behind a bush of broom, I might command the road before our door. I was scarcely in position ere my enemies began to arrive, seven or eight of them, running hard, their feet beating out of time along the road and the man with the lantern some paces in front. Three men ran together, hand in hand; and I made out, even through the mist, that the middle man of this trio was the blind beggar. The next moment his voice showed me that I was right. "Down with the door!" he cried. |
